âGeneral Volt has your soldier by the throat and the other felidae female has a big knife to his . . .â Silas lowered his hand to his crotch. âWhat are they waiting for?â
Frank stood beside Silas. Heâd come running into his office fifteen minutes ago and had handed him a pair of binoculars. âIâm not going down there. Are you?â
âI like my balls and my throat where they are, so no.â
They were cowards, hiding in a building and spying on a scene from the safety of his office. Nothing that had happened over the last forty-eight hours had to have occurred. The needless violence and bloodshed. The deaths. The danger his decision had placed his family and nation in. None of it shouldâve happened, but it all had because Silas wanted what didnât belong to him.
From his perch, Silas found he didnât mind the role of coward, not when playing hero couldâve had his life in the literal hands of two hardcore felidae females.
âYou gave them permission to torture the girl.â
âHow the hell else did you think we were going to get her to sign? Youâre worthless, Silas. Spineless and worthless.â
âSpineless? I donât see you down there with your Sergeant Major. If your spine is made of sterner stuff than mine, then go down there and tell General Volt it was you who gave the order to have her sekhem tortured. You go, and Iâll stay here and watch you through my nice binoculars while she rips out that spine you think so highly of.â
âShut up. . . . Did you hear that?â Frank lifted the walkie-talkie between them. âThe general said something to the girl.â
âHer hand is still on the PTT button?â
âShe must want us to hear whatâs going on.â
âWhat did sheââ
âShush.â
âLive or die, my sekhem. What is your will?â
âDid she just?â His fingers on the binoculars tightened.
âThe girl decides our fate.â
Silas had feared as much, but Frank sounded stunned. âSheâs their leader. Itâs her right.â
âSheâs a girl. Eighteen. A child. Our fate shouldnât be decided by a child.â Frank pressed the lens of his binoculars against the pane of glass. âItâs for show. All of those felidae wonât listen to a girl barely out of high school. The general, sure, but not a child. She rules nothing. Not a goddamn thing, Silas.â
It began as one, maybe two roars, then grew to twenty. Fifty. A hundred. More. More. Within seconds, the hundreds of Shona whoâd converged on his headquarters were roaring. Lights in his office flickered, the building shook, and Silas thought a tornado had touched down right outside his window.
They raged. The sounds of their fury an ear-splitting, heart-pounding prelude to death. Silas was sure they would rush the gate, break down the doors, and swarm inside. Any moment he would hear the scratch of claws outside his door then feel the prick of sharp teeth at his throat.
âToo loud. Hurts.â Frank dropped to his knees, binoculars and walkie-talkie skidded across the floor, and hands covered ears.
Silas wanted to take cover like Frank.
